Frequently Asked Questions

Registration & Requirements
B.R.A.K.E.S. is not a driver's education course. We do not provide the services for someone to obtain a driver's license or permit.
Visit the schedule page https://registration.putonthebrakes.org/classes to see when classes open for registration. All classes open at 10:00am (per the facility’s time zone).
You can also click “Notify Me” to be reminded about a class opening for registration.
Make sure you create an account prior to the class opening for quicker registration. You will be required to verify your email before your account is active.
Once the class is open for registration, click Register. Then select your session time and complete the registration form and pay our deposit.
Your seat is held for 10 minutes while you are filling out the registration information.
You will need yours and your teen’s license number in order to complete registration.
· Teens must be 15-19 years old to attend (16-20 if attending in North Carolina)
· Minimum of a Learner’s Permit
· 30 hours of prior driving experience
· A parent/guardian to attend the entire session with their teen
· $99 deposit to hold your seat in the class. This deposit if refundable after attending.
Over the weekend, we have five different session times available. You will register/attend one of these three-hour sessions.
Saturday:
· 8:00am-11:00am
· 11:30am-2:30pm
· 3:00pm-6:00pm
Sunday
· 8:00am-11:00am
· 12:00pm-3:00pm
We are only able to train a maximum of 180 teens a weekend. If a class is full, you have the option to add yourself to the Waitlist. Adding yourself to the waitlist does not guarantee registration. This gives us a way to contact you if a seat has become available online.
Opens seats depend on cancellations of those currently registered.
If you are notified about an open seat in your desired class, please be aware these seats are open to the public and can be taken by anyone. Please be proactive in going online and getting registered before the seat is taken.
The waitlist from previous locations/dates does not transfer to new classes.
Deposits Policies
We require a $99 deposit per teen to hold your seat in the class. This deposit ensures attendance and no wasted recourses.
At the completion of the class, you have two options:
- You can leave your deposit as a donation. This allows us to continue our mission of saving lives. A tax donation letter will be emailed to you the following week
- Request a Refund. This must be handled on site at the registration table, at the end of class.
Your card will be refunded by the Tuesday after your weekend class.
As a 501c3, we rely on donations and public support to continue our mission.
If you would like to support our program and leave your deposit as a donation, at the end of your session, simply thank your instructors and head on home! Deposits are only refunded if requested at the end of the class.
If you would like to request a refund on your $99 deposit, you must go to the Registration table and let the representative know at the end of your session, before leaving the facility.
If you would like to donate a portion of your deposit, you are also able to make this request at the Registration table at the end of your session.
No Shows waste valuable charity resources, including the cost of vehicles, professional instructors, and volunteers that B.R.A.K.E.S. assembles for each program to ensure that the experience will exceed all expectations. Worse, NO SHOWS deprive other teens and parents that are waiting for the opportunity to attend the B.R.A.K.E.S. driving experience.
If you do not show up for the class, your $99 will be forfeited.
Forfeited deposits CANNOT be accredited to future classes.

Day of Event
We begin PROMPTLY on time! Every minute of our program includes valuable life-saving information you do not want to miss!
We ask teens and parents to arrive 30 minutes prior to their listed session time to complete waivers and check-in.
Late attendees will not be permitted to attend.
Teens and parents MUST bring their VALID driver’s permit or license with them to the school. If you do not have your permit or license, you will not be able to attend the school. As a backup, attendees should take a photo of their license with their cell phones.
We will not be able to allow teens to attend if their license is expired. Please be sure your teen’s license will be valid by their class date.
Yes! The vehicles used during your three-hour session will be provided by us.
All vehicles are KIA vehicles.
Closed toes shoes are required to be worn during the course. Sandals/Flip-flops can be a hazard while driving. Especially while making quick maneuvers.
Clothing must be appropriate and cover the chest, stomach and buttocks completely.
Please avoid any clothing that may be deemed offensive by others.
Participants will be asked to change if clothing is deemed inappropriate.
We hold our classes rain or shine!
If needed, we will keep the parents in the classroom while the teen’s driving portion is going on.
It is very rare that a class is completely cancelled. In the case of severe dangerous weather, classes may be delayed or cancelled. You will be notified via email if there has been a change to your session.
Attendance & Participation
No! Siblings attending together will only need one parent with them. Multiple parents are welcome to attend, but only one is required.
The driving groups for teens are randomly assigned at check-in, so it is not likely they will be in the same car. We recommend teens not be in the same car as friends/family because it can cause extra distraction and hinder their learning experience.
We strongly encourage parent/guardians of teens to attend the program with their teen, so there is consistent education for parent to teen. We can allow another adult to be the acting guardian for a teen. We will just need a Guardianship Form completed by the parents before the class. To request this form, please reach out to the office.
Office hours Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm ET
Phone: 704-720-3806 Email: register@putonthebrakes.org
Acting guardians must be 25 years or older.
We do not offer any adult programs at this time. Our program is specifically for teen drivers ages 15-19 (16-20 if in NC)
Parent Requirement
The teen’s parent or legal guardian is required to attend the school for several reasons. B.R.A.K.E.S. feels it is important for parents to take an active role in their teen’s driver education. By providing parents the opportunity to experience both the classroom and driving portions of the school, we hope you will be able to guide your teen’s driving long after they leave the school. A second reason the teen’s parent or legal guardian must attend, is to sign liability and legal waivers required for your teen to participate in the school.
Yes, your parent or legal guardian must attend even if you are 18 years or older.

BRAKES is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, so we are only able to travel where we have the funding and resources. If you are interested in trying to bring us to your area you can visit https://putonthebrakes.org/bring-brakes-to-your-town to get some more information on what we need in order to hold a class.
