The dangers of talking on a cell phone while driving
Written by Sara FenstererThis comic, published in USA Today, shows the amount of social commentary taking place in America today regarding texting while driving. It also draws a comparison between drinking and driving and texting while driving. In data recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, researchers estimate that cell phone-using motorists are as likely to cause a crash a someone with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08, a level at which many states deem a driver impaired.
There is something else this comic points out. For many years there has been a public outcry about the dangers of drinking while driving and laws have been put in place to prevent this action. Young adults have begun to make responsible decisions about designating a driver when drinking. Since heavy cell phone use has only been going on for 10 to 15 years, the public outcry has been delayed. Laws are starting to be enacted to curb this dangerous habit and the public is just now beginning to regard texting while driving to be as dangerous as drinking while driving.
